Julius Dam and the associated water supply scheme was constructed to provide additional water for the expanding needs of Mount Isa and surrounding areas.

Uses of Water

Urban Water Supplies

The city of Mount Isa is supplied from the scheme.

Various mines are supplied from the scheme via the Mt Isa Water Board and North West Queensland Water Pipeline Company, which pipe water from the Dam to their customers.

Major Storage

Julius Dam

Julius Dam is located at the junction of Paroo Creek and the Leichhardt River, some 70 kilometres north-east of Mount Isa.

The dam is unique in Queensland and is a concrete multiple arch and buttress type structure, with the spillway discharging over the tops of the arches. The spillway crest is 18.3 metres above bed level.

The arch barrels, founded on a triangular arch base, are constructed in independent arch rings and are hinged at buttress springing lines. The spillway is a precast superstructure and the dissipation slab at ground level is post tensioned to the foundation rock.
